We believe good salt can change the way you eat.

We have been sustainably farming sea salt in our family for over 70 years! To create good sea salt, you need a mixture of knowledge, patience, and, most of all, passion. Thankfully, mother nature and gravity do most of the work to create our sea salt. Our great community of salt farmers from the village of Kitame hand harvest the sea salt when it is ready. We really love what we do!

Farming Sea Salt: Pan-to-Plate

A common response to the taste of our sea salt is: ‘How did you make it so salty?’. Well, this is what salt should taste like. It takes just over one month from start to finish to make a single salt crystal. Thankfully, we let mother nature do most of the hard work.

It all begins at the pristine, mineral-rich waters of the Indian Ocean. We collect sea water at the highest of tides along a tidal creek. It is gravity fed through a mosaic of pans to remove any unwanted elements, like Gypsum, through evaporation by the sun and the wind. This will eventually create very salty sea water called brine.

When there is the right concentration of saltiness, the brine is transferred into our evaporation pans for the final stage of the process. With the final bit of evaporation by Mother Nature, salt begins to form and fall to the bottom of the pan. Once enough salt has formed, our team of salt farmers hand harvest the salt and leave it out to dry for a day or two.

Once dry, the salt is taken to our little factory to be sorted, cleaned, and packaged ready for your table. Simple as that! It’s a long process that requires passion and patience by a team who cares.

Flavoured salts: taking seasoning one step further.

We take seasoning one step further with a range of deliciously flavoured sea salts. We have meticulously sourced organic ingredients from Tanzania to create our flavour blends. Your kitchen should be ready with a flavoured salt range that is made for any occasion and cooking style.

The key principles behind the ingredients:

  • High quality
  • Organic
  • Locally produced
  • Supports local farmers

Check out the story behind our flavours and how to use them in the ‘A Pinch Forward’.

We let nature lead

From evaporating the brine to drying out our salt, we let nature do the hard work. Sustainability plays a key role in the production of our sea salt while creating our unique taste.

Our salt pans are a support system for the isolated local community, Kitame, and for the wildlife that thrive within and around the salt pans.

Happy Asilia Salt team

For Earth.

Our salt is a gift from Mother Nature. From the algae that filters our sea water, to the sun and wind that evaporates our brine. To From the flamingos, fish, and prawns that feed off the algae to the pelicans and seagulls that feed off the fish, nature prospers with each flake of salt we make. A thriving ecosystem in and around the salt farm indicates the quality of sea salt.

For People.

The purpose of our journey is to produce sustainable sea salt whilst growing the community neighbouring our salt farm. Kitame is located in an extremely remote area with no electricity, fresh water supply, or permanent road. Through our community projects, the Kitame now has access to fresh water, electricity, a small clinic, school buildings and furniture, and we maintain the 10 kilometre stretch of road to allow safe access to the district road.

Our aim for every project is to ensure it is sustainably developed and led by the village. We have meetings every three months to understand what the current issues are and how to best tackle them. The people of Kitame are our community and we want to invest in their future and well-being.
